Surge in Van Rental in Fuerteventura: The New Summer Tourism Trend

The summer of 2023 has marked a milestone in Fuerteventura’s tourism industry with a significant increase in demand for van and camper van rentals. This shift in accommodation preferences has been attributed mainly to tourists escaping urban overcrowding, searching for natural experiences, and needing cost-effective alternatives to traditional hotels.

According to a survey conducted by Milanuncios, the demand for camper vans has seen an impressive surge of 32% in the first seven months of the year, while motorhome rentals have followed suit with a 12.6% increase compared to 2022. These figures are even more striking considering the average 7.8% hike in rental prices.

Prices vary based on the season, destination, and rental platform. Still, a wide range of affordable options is available for travellers. Tourism mobility options have diversified to cater to different budgets, from camper vans for two people starting at 55 euros per day to spacious motorhomes for four travellers starting from 90 euros.

“The surge in prices during these vacations has pushed us as a society to seek new alternatives, as the data shows,” stated Íñigo Vallejo, spokesperson for Milanuncios. “We turn to the second-hand market to find other ways to travel and experience new adventures, enjoying vacations often unattainable in the conventional market due to their prices.”

This shift towards alternative accommodation options has also increased interest in camping. The Spanish Campsites Federation (FEEC) reported a 28.3% increase in camping demand between January and July. Additionally, the average occupancy is expected to exceed 90%, with an 80% occupancy in open-air pitches for motorhomes, campers, and caravans.

Fuerteventura, known for its natural beauty and temperate climate, has become an ideal destination for those seeking an escape from routine and immersing themselves in a more authentic travel experience. Van and motorhome rentals have allowed tourists to explore every corner of the island, from its pristine beaches to majestic volcanic landscapes, providing unparalleled freedom and flexibility.

In summary, the surge in van and motorhome rentals in Fuerteventura reflects an emerging trend in tourism, where travellers seek more personal, flexible, and nature-connected experiences. This shift represents an exciting opportunity for tourists and the local tourism industry, offering a new perspective to enjoy this Canary Island gem more authentically and memorably.
