5 spots not to be missed on your trip to El Hierro

The island of El Hierro is the westernmost of the Canary Islands where we can find both coastal and mountainous landscapes. In this blog we will reveal which of all these wonderful natural spots you cannot miss if you come to visit this island.

La Restinga Nature Reserve

This nature reserve of volcanic origin is located in the Atlantic Ocean and reaches depths of more than 300 metres.

Its waters are characterised by being calm as they are in the trade wind zone and are home to a wide variety of species that are not found in the rest of the archipelago.

Blue pool

Charco Azul is a group of natural pools located on the coast of the municipality of San Andrés y Sauces.

In 2013 it was awarded the international Ecoplaya flag prize for its large size and safety, both for adults and children, as it also has a paddling pool with a smooth bottom.

There is a car park nearby, toilets and a kiosk in case you need to make any last minute arrangements.

La Llania circular route

Known for its contrasting landscapes, this route, located in Valverde in the north of El Hierro, has seven kilometres of thick, humid forests that form part of the protected area of the rural park of La Frontera, on the one hand, and blackened sands and coastal landscapes that will take you to the grandiose Gulf on the other.

The village and pools of Pozo de las Calcosas

Undoubtedly one of the obligatory stops if you want to get to know this beautiful island are the natural pools of Pozo de las Calcosas, located in the municipality of Valverde. It is a small natural bay enclosed by a cliff where you can see what life was like on the island years ago.

You can enjoy a quiet swim surrounded by nature and see the houses with a roof made of colmo or vegetable materials that the old fishermen used to build for their summer holidays.

El Hierro giant lizard recovery centre

Within the Ecomuseum of Guinea is this centre for the captive breeding of the Galliota Simonyi, declared the most endangered reptile in Europe and one of the five most endangered reptiles in the world.

Visiting hours are from Monday to Sunday from 10.00 to 18.00.
